Other day I read “Refreshing The Ubuntu Brand“, upcoming visual style changes for Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and my only comment to this whole story was “Don’t tell me you’re moving window control elements to the left side of window in Lucid …” :sidefrown:
Either way if this is the “revolutionary” change for Ubuntu, then I have a visual style suggestion for Squeeze as well.
Since Gnome is default desktop environment in Debian and as it looks like right now 2.30 will be what’s going to be included into Squeeze; nothing much, or nothing really will visually change in Gnome by then. So … how about this :lamp:
For some time now I’ve been troubled by some things in Gnome, and what’s bothering me the most is “System” menu. Why? Well because the list of utilities listed both under “Administration” and “Preferences” is so long that it’s almost useless. So without losing your precious seconds of your life and losing fair amount of nerves … well this is what’s required to find what you were initially looking for. Interesting enough is the fact (please do stress) that Gnome consists of a fine thing called “gnome-control-center” which is not included in any of Gnome menus. :idk:

I’m using Gnome as my default DE after my KDE4 dissapointment, however what’s bothering me for some time now is that I have to “live” with applications that I don’t even use or like for that matter. So why “live” with those? Well if I try to remove some of those applications it’ll want to “pull down” my whole DE along with them, however I couldn’t believe solution was so simple.
Applications I don’t want to live with are: evolution, epiphany, empathy, ekiga, liferea, gnome-accessibility and couple of others. Step 1 might seem as it wants to remove “whole” DE, but it all it wants is gnome-desktop-environment which is meta/dummy package so don’t worry.
sudo apt-get remove epiphany epiphany-browser-data epiphany-data empathy
empathy-doc libempathy30 libempathy-common libempathy-gtk28 liferea
liferea-data evolution ekiga gok dasher orca gnome-accessibility
openoffice.org-evolution evolution-common evolution-data-server

It’s been almost 2 months since my last post here on foolcontrol.
After I got enough of emails of you guys asking me: “Was that it for foolcontrol?” “Is foolcontrol dead?” “Are you dead?” “Why haven’t you been writing anything?” … I thought least I can do is post anything. Problem is that I was incredibly busy, so it all just kinda hit me hard, working on a lot of projects (simultaneously of course), then this and that … it was just too much to handle. At least in a sense to write a blog post, after work once I’m home, instead of relaxing, enjoying myslef, I’d just switch to work on my other project(s).
Don’t get me wrong, I love working, I’m really enjoying it, and this blog or whatever you want to call it, I’m doing all of this from pure enjoyment, not cuz I’m forced to do so or anything like that. And thank all to the guys who were actually “worried” about what’s happening both to me and foolcontrol. Since a lot has happened in a period since my last post, this will pretty much what “ordinary” people write on their blogs, and that is, boring stuff from their life :)
What was I doing that kept me so busy?
Beginning of summer, for most people synonym for heat, beaches, hot naked objects and beer. So just as summer started I got hired to develop School Information System for AUBIH. Briefly … Debian, Postgresql, Apache, PHP and tons of caffeine. Whole system took me around 3months to develop, and was one of the projects that kept me most occupied this whole summer.
