This document was composed in aim to briefly reflect on Debian packaging system (dpkg) and provide information on how Debian packages are automatically created and managed (uploaded) using Maven/Ant. Scope of the document implies that the reader already has basic knowledge of Debian/dpkg and/or Maven/Ant. Even though there are concise theoretical explanation, author tried the “teach by examples” approach, thus you’ll be able to find plethora of code examples.Debian packet creation is more then just a simple hack which consists of putting right files into right directories, there’s also lot of parts of packing process which weren’t explained in depth. I highly advise you read the official Debian New Maintainers’ Guide to get a full understanding on what was tried to be said here.
Since intention of this document is to be as straightforward as possible, for your assistance some parts have been marked as:
- “Technical²”, providing additional technical insight, isn’t absolutely necessary and can even be skipped:
- “Additional info.”, additional notes regarding particular step, should pay attention:

Almost all of wiki contents got updated, so please take your time to review it all, once again :heh:
“nü” was more of a symbolic meaning, since in meantime we solved our bids “weakest links” and pretty much got it “mature” and at the stage we were aiming it to be. We’ll still make some minor changes to it until the final decision date (in 47 hours) but this is it really  So without further ado, let me introduce you to our nü wiki :announce: Since besides changing pretty much the whole wiki we have also added (important) new pages for:
Banja Luka and Republika Srpska
We have added a new pages to bring Banja Luka and Republika Srpska closer to every potential visitor.
Full Government Support
Today we have received the most important information when it comes to our bid. Today government council sitting was done, where one of the topics was full financial support in case Banja Luka is host to DebConf11. Proposition was accepted! To remind you, we will get free venue building whether it’s “Government Building” or “Banski Dvori”, besides that we’re getting them to cover basically all of the costs needed for the conference, and besides that we’re getting 5 additional members to our local team (highly capable and educated govt. officials) which even includes city Mayor. Early tomorrow we’ll get scan/fax of this memorandum from Chief of Cabinet along with the local team names which will all together be added to this very wiki page.

Just a quick note to everybody, after post “Debian Start!” (thank you for all your feedback!) I’ve decided to definitely continue my work on this little “project”.
Just so you know, besides
foolcontrol.org/debstart you can find it on start.debian.net from now on ;)
I still have a lot of ideas to realize when it comes to this project, so feel free to expect changes soon.
Ana thanks for the subdomain :)
Debian 5.0 Lenny was released on 14th this month. 22 months of development, I knew the exact release date long time upfront, but I didn’t plan that right on that day FoolControl will go through some downtime :/
Nevertheless, Lenny is out, and out of sudden I don’t have much stuff left to talk about on this very topic now :) I find Lenny to be one of the best releases Debian releases yet, I too contributed to this release as much as I could. Didin’t make into package maintainers, but it’s all matter of free time, and dedication really.
I’ve been with Lenny, well pretty much since Etch was released, I moved to Lenny. Since Lenny is stable now, and new testing is Squeeze, don’t jump on Squeeze right about now, since there aren’t security updates at the moment, since security team for Squeeze isn’t formed yet.
However, Lenny has been great for very long time, and I’d really enjoying sticking to it, but I believe I’ll move to next testing in no time, life on stable … it’s boring :)

Earlier this year, I talked a lot about making my own Linux distribution, Codename: peacenow (talk), then later on I even posted a Codename: peacenow | open design (ideas, possible design). I put the whole thing on one long “pause”. What happened in the meantime is … well among other things, I changed my “codename” … I even switched to Gnome after KDE4 being what it is.
I really don’t know how to explain this … so breathe with me. I personally see IT in following specters, Graphics/Design/Art, Programming, Networking. But just recently I was put in a position …
Fuck this, starting today, I’m actually starting the work on my own Linux distribution. In imperfect world, there’s no perfect linux distributions, they are all visions of various minds, but none of them suiting enough to fill every single void.
My whole life I’ve been “distro hopping”, but in a period of last two years, I changed soo many distributins that’s it’s just … I even managed to change 3 distros in 7 days. Yea, I even managed to get a nickname “distro whore” :)
Point being that I really believe that I can make something different. What I know right now is that it’ll definetely be based on Debian. In begining it may not even look any different then Debian itself, since I’m not even sure I’m forking it or anything … obvious will that it’ll be less stable (no it won’t be another Ubuntu), different name and different philosophy.
