start.debian.net

August 28, 2009 – 1:10 am by AbsintheSyringe

Just a quick note to everybody, after post “Debian Start!” (thank you for all your feedback!) I’ve decided to definitely continue my work on this little “project”.

Just so you know, besides foolcontrol.org/debstart you can find it on start.debian.net from now on Wink

I still have a lot of ideas to realize when it comes to this project, so feel free to expect changes soon.

Ana thanks for the subdomain Smile

  2. just a couple of quick comments:

    1) the “search” button overflows over the right margin of the background here (iceweasel 3.5)

    2) isn’t it weird that there is no link to bugs.debian.org? after all is the first and easiest way for our users to contribute back to us

  3. Hi, looks great. I’m in the UK, and use http://www.google.co.uk which gives slightly different results — would it be possible to internationalise the start page. Different googles and presumably different languages would be a major plus!

  5. I’m actually writing that as I’m writing this comment.

Next version of Start! is supposed to be rendered correctly in every browser on any OS + with settings page where you’ll be able to change many things Wink

Thanks for the suggestion tho Smile

  6. 1) The “search” button overflows over the logo if use nondefault fonts (Konqueror 3.5.7) (I have poor eyesight).
    2) Why are scrollers here?

  7. 1. I’m aware of this problem, as I already said, everything is in its early stage, so please have patience for a little while.

    2. Because I was trying to make it work for Steve Parker on http://foolcontrol.org/?p=712 and other 1024×600 users, by having no scrollers css rule, which actually adds scroller in konqueror. Removed and it should all be fine now.

  8. Hi,

    Good idea !

    just some “perfs” notes :
    - the debbgt.gif (39K) is 18% smaller in PNG (32K)
    - the start page doesn’t use “on the fly” compression
    - this page doesn’t allow any caching (etag, expires ?)
    - images doesn’t have expires flag too

  9. Let’s switch the static “Forums” link with a “Bugs” link. Why promote the unofficial forums when there’s a gmane web forum interface to the official debian mailing lists?

  10. How about using the [label] tag for ‘Debian only’ checkbox? It’s easier to click, and XHTML-friendly…
