I was the first in our LUG to find out about Free Solaris DVD, I posted something along the line: “Open Solaris looking up on Ubuntu – Short registration, and unbelieveable but DVD’s should arrive in 10 work days time period. You’ll get 10CD’s per “order” and OS is x86-86/SPARC compliant. ” I posted that on “14.01.2007 23:11:16”

Today is 31.07.2007, almost 8months after that post, I never got my Solaris. Nothing. Today my cuzin who got months ago, gave it to me, so after almost 8months in the end I got my hands on it.

I tried this on x86 notebook.

root@havok:~# cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -i model
model : 14 model name : Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2400 @ 1.83GHz
model : 14
model name : Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2400 @ 1.83GHz
root@havok:~#

Popped in x64/x86 DVD, and install started.

Teaching you how to walk throughout install process

Installation process, I definitely like it, seriously.

Ah, core dumped …

What did we learn from this lesson? Order Open Solaris for free, wait some 8 months to get it, once you realize you wont get it … then get it from a friend or a relative. Then try to install it on x86 box, get a core.dump and move on.

P.S: This wasn’t Solaris bashing or anything like that, this was just mein teil.
